It happens so easily someone is carless with a cigarette and there you are a burn mark on your carpet.  Don't panic there are a couple of things that you can do.

Minor Carpet Repair - First clip away the damaged fibers with a set of sharp, small scissors, you should then lightly scrub the remaining fibers with a scouring pad to remove the darkened tips of the carpet fibers.  Vacuum away the clipped material.

Major Carpet Repair - For serious and deeper burns, you will likely need to patch the carpet.  If you have remnants of the original carpet that may work, but if the carpet is older you may see the patch.  It is better to take a small patch from an that is rarely seen, say in the bottom of a closet or under a desk - and remove the same size patch that you will need, newer carpet can patch this area if you have.

Use a utility knife and a round object such as; lid from jar, plant pot, small coin (depends on size of the burn area) and cut a neat circle around the burn mark, and then cut an identical circle out of the carpet donor area.  Use double sided carpet tape or carpet adhesive to set the patch firmly in place. .

You are now one step closer to knowing how to repair anything and everything.
